Honouring Pope Francis: A Life of Simplicity, Service, and Faith

La Salle University joins the Catholic Church and millions across the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis. He passed away in Rome on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His life and leadership touched countless lives, and his legacy will continue to inspire for generations.

A Pope Close to the People

From the very beginning of his time as Pope, Francis showed that he would be different. On the night of his election, March 13, 2013, he greeted the crowd simply with “Buona sera,” meaning “Good evening” in Italian. This short greeting said a lot about his down-to-earth personality.

Instead of living in the luxurious Papal apartments, he chose to stay in a modest guest house called Domus Sanctae Marthae. This showed that he wanted to stay close to the people and live simply, like a true shepherd with his flock.

Inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi

He was the first Pope to choose the name Francis, inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi—who is remembered for his love of nature, care for the poor, and strong belief in human unity. Pope Francis followed this path in both word and action, living a life of simplicity, compassion, and openness.

A Historic Papacy

Born on December 17, 1936, in Argentina, he was one of five children. He made history as the first Pope from Latin America, the first Jesuit Pope, and the first Pope who didn’t take part in the Second Vatican Council. Even though he wasn’t part of that important Church event, he lived out its message fully.

He often quoted the words from the Church document Gaudium et Spes: “The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age… are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This message guided his leadership. He always stood with the poor, the forgotten, and the struggling.

A Voice for the Earth and for Unity

Pope Francis believed that life is deeply connected: to God, to others, and to the Earth. In his famous letter Laudato Si, he urged the world to take better care of nature and our environment. Later, in Fratelli Tutti, he reminded us that we are all brothers and sisters, part of one global family living in a shared home.

A Memorable Visit to Philadelphia

In 2015, Pope Francis visited Philadelphia as part of a U.S. trip linked to the World Meeting of Families. People from all religions gathered to hear him speak at Independence Hall, watch his Mass near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and cheer for him in the streets. He even visited a correctional centre, showing his care for those society often ignores.

This visit touched hearts, and it was clear that Pope Francis saw no boundaries when it came to spreading love, hope, and unity.

Focus on Young People and Education

In 2019, he launched the Global Compact on Education, a worldwide initiative to bring people together and build a more caring and understanding society through education. He wanted the world to focus more on the needs of young people and the power of open conversations, listening, and inclusion.

A Lasting Legacy

Pope Francis’s dream was for the Church to walk together with everyone—young and old, rich and poor, men and women. He worked hard to build a synodal Church, where decisions are made together, through prayer and discussion.

His life teaches us that faith should be lived through actions—by serving others, caring for the Earth, listening to the unheard, and staying united.

As we remember Pope Francis, let us also remember our duty to carry his message forward. Whether at Church, in society, or here at La Salle University, let’s live his legacy by being of service to each other and to the world around us. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
